Job Description

Job Title: Peer Support Specialist

Department: Clinical Outpatient
Reports To: Clinical Supervisor
FLSA Status: Hourly / Non-Exempt

Hours: 8a-4:30p Monday-Friday

Position Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist uses personal experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to support others in their recovery journey. They serve as a role model and advocate, helping individuals build skills, access resources, and regain control of their lives. Services are provided at the agency and in the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Share personal recovery experiences to inspire hope and model wellness.

  • Lead and support peer groups and one-on-one sessions.

  • Help individuals connect with community resources, social activities, and support groups.

  • Encourage and assist with problem-solving and decision-making in daily life.

  • Promote healthy relationships and social skills.

  • Assist with crisis support when needed.

  • Help with basic care tasks like serving meals or distributing hygiene supplies.

  • Take and report vital signs if trained and authorized.

  • Support clients in navigating medical, legal, and social service systems.

  • Facilitate WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) sessions.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED

  • Preferred: 2+ years of experience in healthcare or substance use treatment

  • Certification: Certified Peer Support Specialist

  • Other: Valid NC or SC driver’s license

Key Competencies:

  • Ability to relate to and support others using lived experience

  • Strong communication and listening skills

  • Dependable, adaptable, and empathetic

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Comfortable using computers and documenting in Electronic Health Records

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Light physical work: walking, sitting, standing, lifting up to 25 lbs

  • Mental tasks include reading, writing, reasoning, and problem-solving

  • No regular exposure to extreme environments or hazardous conditions

This position does not include supervisory duties. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
